The Complexion Dream Team

In a bid to get myself out of a slight make-up rut I picked up the L'Oreal Infallible 24H-Matte Foundation so I can try to experiment more with my base. I haven't tried it with a brush or fingers yet but I've fallen in love with it after using it with the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge.

As a combination-oily skin girl, I sometimes find that I struggle with foundation in the summer because the heat makes my foundation just slide off my face but this is matte enough to stay in place with just a light layer of powder to set which is nice, and the shade selection seems good (although maybe not so good for a very dark skin-tone).

The fact that the foundation is quite a matte finish means it could probably leave looking looking a bit flat if you aren't careful but, when applied with a dampened sponge, it gives a lovely fresh finish that looks healthy without adding any unnecessary shine to an oily complexion.

Review Friday: No7 Extreme Length Waterproof Mascara

I'd noticed that my Friday review posts had been quite skincare heavy since I introduced it as a weekly theme post and today I want to rectify that so let's talk make-up for a minute or two. I recently picked up a mini of the No7 Extreme Length Waterproof Mascara and while I know mascara can be one of those things that are quite personal to the user, I thought I'd give my 2 cents on this one.

Okay, so my first point is this: the name of this mascara is EXTREME length. So I applied it thinking I'd have some really good lengthy lashes by the end of the first application. Wrong. While you can build up a decent amount of length of your lashes with a few coats, it does take a little bit of work and it's not a false-lash look by any means. Although the product doesn't advertise any volume-building qualities, I thought I should mention that I didn't really notice any difference to the thickness of my lashes with this mascara, even after multiple coats.

I road-tested the waterproof claim at the gym, after an hour and a half of cardio/resistance training in the middle of summer (where, trust me, there was a lot of sweat happening - keeping it real) it didn't seem to budge at all. That being said it's not one of those waterproof mascaras that's removal proof. I just popped a bit of my Superfacialist by Una Brennan Vitamin C Cleansing Oil into my fingers, massaged gently into my lashes, removed with a warm, damp wash-cloth and it was gone.

So the verdict? Not very well advertised with the "Extreme Length" name, but for what I'd use a waterproof mascara for (bottom lashes or a gym mascara) it's pretty perfect, not sure I'd pick it up again though because I'm not too fussed for waterproof mascara.

My Recent Rose Obsession

Have you ever noticed yourself going through a Beauty Phase? I've had my colourful eyeshadow phase and my bold-boardering-on-black lipstick phase and now? I'm apparently having my rose-in-everything phase. I know that a rose scent isn't for everyone, but it is definitely for me and so I thought I'd spend a little while today talking about my top 5 rose scented products.

Something I've been enjoying skincare wise for a long time is facial mists, and I remember mentioning the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist when I first received the sample size of it at Beauty Chat Live. While I don't use facial mists every night and recently when I want a mist I've been reaching for La Roche Posay Serozinc a lot for it's anti-blemish properties, I do really enjoy rosewater sprays and find them super refreshing, particularly now that the weather's warming up. Since then I've tried a few more rosewater type products and this one still reins supreme. In fact, I can see myself needing the full size bottle soon.

It makes me slightly sad to say that Space NK's Smoky Rose Candle has become a favourite of mine recently, mainly because I don't have an awful lot left and it seems to have been limited edition as I can't find it on the website anywhere. It's just exactly how the name suggests, a rose scent with a hint of smokiness to it that makes it a lovely room fragrance. It smells really strong in the candle but when it burns it just has a pleasantly "there" scent that isn't overpowering at all.

On the same lines of that slightly more mature rose scent, a body product I've been enjoying is the Renewing Rose Body Cream by Aromatherapy Associates. It's a lovely light body cream that ha a soft and subtle rose scent to it that isn't too heavy or too sweet. Out of all the products I'm mentioning in this post this is what I would call the truest rose scent. It's not my every-day body cream just because it's quite indulgently priced, but it's a treat and do I love it? Yes I do.

My budget rose scented pick is the Una Brennan Rose Hydrate Intense Moisture Mask. It goes onto the skin like a standard face cream but takes a little while to sink it. I'd call it a high-street alternative to the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask, similar to that product, the Una Brennan can be left on overnight or if you just want a quick hit of hydration you can leave it on for 5-20 minutes and then remove with a damp wash cloth.

And finally the creme de la creme of rose products: the MV Organics Rose Plus Booster. It's a luxurious sweet rose scented facial oil and it's lovely for morning or night. It sinks into the skin nicely and leaves the skin feeling hydrated and moisturised but not greasy. Works well under makeup or overnight and the scent just ramps up the luxury factor even more. The only downside? The price. But I love it so much that I can deal with the hefty price tag.

Sainsbury's Do Skincare

I was recently browsing the beauty isles in search of a few budget beauty buys for an upcoming series of posts Im working on when I spotted the sainsbury's own line for skincare. Everthing I could see in the range was £2 or less and the whole bunch were on 3-for-2 so I picked up the 3 products that looked like they'd work for me best for me to see how I liked the range.

The range was really small and was made up or 2 sub-ranges, the "Tea Tree" range and the "Vitamin E" range. Both ranges contained a foam cleanser and a scrub and then the vitamin E range also had a cleansing lotion and an SPF day cream. Despite my oily complexion I know that tea tree on my skin can be a little stripped so I picked up a few pieces from the Vitamin E range instead.

The first product I picked up was the cleansing lotion as I know this is a formula that normally works for me so I figured I was giving the range a fair chance by giving that product a try, and my verdict? It does the job. It's by no means a luxury but it cleans the face and doesn't seem to leave my skin feeling dry or tight afterwards.

The product I wasn't sure I'd like was the foam cleanser, but I gave it a go anyway and I as expected, it's a tiny bit too drying on my skin. It doesn't contain any sodium laryth/lareth sulphate and it isn't particularly foaming on the skin but it just left my skin feel a teeny bit tight.

My favourite product from the range is by far the SPF 15 day cream. It's light and scent-less and is just enough moisture for my skin so it doesn't feel heavy and it works fine under makeup. I'd normally use a day cream and a separate SPF but for days where I'm in a hurry but need that SPF protection this is great.

All in all? A slightly hit-and-miss range, but for the price-point, I'd say it's probably worth a try.

The Weekly Review - RMK Point Make-Up Remover

So we all know that I love the Superfacialist by Una Brennan Vitamin C Cleansing Oil, but I still love trying out new cleansers and make-up removers, if only to prove that my love for the Una Brennan is the real deal. So when I saw that Birchbox has sent me a sample size of the RMK Point Make-up Remover, I was all kinds of into trying it. The sample size is actually great, 50ml which is over a 3rd of the product you'd get when you purchase the full size, but it's still small enough to be great for travel.

This product was released to replace the discontinued Eye Make-up Remover Ex, and is a standard bi-faze make-up remover that has 2 layers that you shake together, pour onto a cotton pad and then sweep over the face to remove make-up and SPF before going in with a second cleanse. Personally I'd say this would have to be used as a first cleanse as it does leave a slight oil-y residue on the skin that makes me want to go in with a second cleanse afterwards but if you have particularly dry skin, this might not bother you so much.

As far as it's make-up removing skills go, I don't wear waterproof mascara and generally wear a light to medium base and the occasional bright lip and it gets everything off just fine for me but I still prefer my Una Brennan. That being said I can imagine I'll be whipping this out a lot for travel for the convenience of not needing to pack flannels/wash cloths and because it's so dinky that it barely takes up any space at all.

A Fragrance Find

When it comes to fragrances, I'm a pretty consistent person. I like my Nina by Nina Ricci and my Eclipse by Ghost and recently I've been getting into Diptique's Do Son but generally, I don't really stray from my favourites too often. That being said, there's a fragrance I've discovered recently that has just busted it's way into my rather exclusive scent stash: Viktor & Rolf's Bon Bon.

It's delightful. I got the 50ml because I loved the scent but the 100ml was just too pricey for me to invest in at the moment, especially with my love affair with Do Son by Diptique being so strong lately. The bottle looks beautiful on my bedroom cabinet and I just can't get enough of the sickly sweet but lightly floral scent. It's also an Eau De Parfum and as I'd normally pick up the Eau De Toilette I'm finding that it hangs around a lot longer than my other fragrances.

Caramel is sited as the main note of the fragrance and that definitely comes through in the scent and gives it a sweetness that isn't too overpowering. Viktor & Rolf don't seem to mention any of the other notes but I can sense a citrus hit and I definitely get a subtle hint of a floral in the base notes.

The Backpacker’s Packing List for Women Who Struggle To Pack Light

WARNING: Very word-y post ahead. Tread carefully.

I've made it no secret on this blog that last year after graduating uni I went traveling around Europe for a month. It was a great trip where I saw lots of amazing things and while there's definitely somethings I'd do differently (up my budget and maybe see less places but stay for longer) my packing list wasn't one of them. Shock Horror. I'm normally that girl. That girl who's going away for a week and came 3g's under the 15kg baggage allowance. That girl whose cosmetics bag takes up half of the physical space in her suitcase. That girl who packs 2 outfits for each day and often doesn't wear half the things she packs. But not this trip.

From the second my friends and I starting planning and booking things for the trip, I was looking up how to pack efficiently and it definitely paid off. My pack was one of the lighter ones, despite having packed all the full sized shower products that my fellow female traveling partners and I planned to share and there wasn't a single thing I needed that I didn't have, or that I had that I didn't use. My packing list looked like this:

  3. Sarong
  4. First Aid Kit
  5. Hand Sanitiser
  6. Sewing Kit
  7. Travel Adapter
  8. Travel Detergent
And it worked. The clothes worked perfectly to create a light but versatile wardrobe and contained enough pieces to ensure that I wasn't constantly doing washing but few enough that it wasn't too heavy on my then very weak shoulders. I found that I had things to wear for all occasions and all weathers and my accessories mixed things up nicely without being so much that I'd lose things.

Bear in mind that we were staying mostly in hostels and often in big dorm-style rooms with people we didn't know so I left all my fine jewellery at home (real gold, pieces of sentimental value) just in case. I found it hard to leave for the airport with just 2 pairs of shoes for the month, but I had everything I needed. The flip flops I packed were quite a nice pair that had beading on them and they worked for day and evening alike and they were a great addition to my pack. I took a pair of converse for a comfortable walking shoe but found that I only wore them when it was quite cold, most days/nights I wore my flip flops.

From a beauty point of view, I took a lot of eyeliners and 3 lip colours as this was the most compact way to give me the variety I liked to have in my make-up and it catered to my every need. I then just packed one lot of base products, knowing that the full coverage foundation could be sheered with a blob of moisturiser or missed entirely depending on my coverage needs. The palette I took was The Balm's Balm Jovi Palette, it was nice and compact and had 12 eyeshadows, a blush, highlight and 2 creamy lip/cheek products (that I don't really like for lips). For skincare, I kept it super simple, cleanser, eye cream, moisturiser, SPF and then if I was feeling burnt or especially dry, I just added a few drops of Bio Oil into my moisturiser. Bio Oil was a great addition to my pack as it's a multipurpose oil, you can use it on your face, body and hair and it's great for dryness and sunburn a like.

Travel Detergent is a must for anyone going traveling on a tight budget. I got a 75ml bottle (more than enough for a month) for around £3 inc. shipping and it saved me so much money on my trip. Quite a lot of the laundrettes charged by item (as much as €3 each) and while hand washing things and having to hang them all over the place for a day to dry wasn't the most ideal, with a €40 a day budget (out of which I was paying for my room for the night, food and attractions) I was realistic and knew that there wasn't space in that budget to be paying to wash my clothes. I will mention that I packed light on underwear, and so hand-washing was really convenient for that, everything was a light material and I'd wash them before I started to get ready in the evening and they'd be dry by morning at the latest.

Another budget-saving item I took was a sewing kit. Just a single needle and 2 reels of cotton so it was super easy to put together. I knew that if I ripped anything, I didn't have the budget to go replacing things so this was great. As it happens, I didn't actually break anything whilst I was away but one of my friends did and so this did actually come in handy. Even if you're taking lots of clothes and a brand new backpack I'd suggest a needle and thread. If worse comes to worse you rip your backpack on day 3 of 40 it'll save you forking out a small fortune in a country you don't know for a new one.

Everyone I traveled with had bought a micro-fiber towel and we all agreed they were great for this kind of trip. They're light, compact and they dry really quickly so they were useful for lots of things. Obviously drying after showering and washing your face, but I took mine to the beach to dry myself off after being in the sea too. Another multi-use item that maybe isn't so obvious is a sarong. I took this everywhere in my day bag throughout the trip and it came in so useful. You can use it as a cover for your shoulders if the sun gets a bit strong, a blanket for if it cools down later, a pillow on the trains traveling from place to place, a picnic blanket, something to lie on at the beach, the possibilities are endless.

And finally, what to pack it all in. I chose backpack. I think it's a more versatile option and while you have to carry the weight with you between destinations, it makes you pack light and if you end up somewhere with lots of stairs, you don't want to be trying to lug a heavy case up them. It also means you'll not pack too many things that are overly valuable (heavy cameras, hair styling tools ect) that may end up lost or stolen. And finally, it's much easier to navigate the train stations with a backpack. The only people we saw struggling to get to the platforms in time for the trains were the ones with wheeled luggage.

Not Another Face Oil?!?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that my skincare stash already contains far too many face oils, especially when you factor in that I have an oily/combination skin type that doesn't really need an oil to get by. What can I say? Some people collect stamps, I apparently collect facial oils, and this one really caught my eye on the shelves of the Clarins counter on my most recent trip to... You guessed it: Boots.

When I saw that Clarins offered 3 different facial oils, that (from a distance) looked identical, I was intrigued to say the least. I haven't really been much for Clarins skincare in the past so this little trio of oils completely missed me. On closer inspection I noticed they had one specifically designed for us with an oily/combo skin and I (almost immediately) found myself at the till purchasing a bottle.

I know I spend an awful lot of time filling the posts on this blog with raves about a products scent, and this oil is no exception, it's fresh and maybe a little bit minty and the smell just adds another level of sensation when you're using it, and for me, it's what makes a product feel like a luxury and refreshes that excitement about skincare all over again. Of course I'm going to enjoy my morning and evening routines more if I enjoy using the products I have on rotation.

As far as the effects it's had on my skin? It's lovely, I find it's nicest to use in the morning as the scent is too fresh to be an over-night oil. Additionally its oil controlling quality makes it a great oil to use under make-up. I find it sits under a full face well and plays nice with moisturisers, primers and foundations a like.

My Top 3 Nail Picks for Spring/Summer

Despite the fact that it's supposedly spring coming up to summer, in my home town of Manchester, it's currently resembling a particularly botched-up shower in a house with no heating. So in an attempt to prepare myself for the summer that may never come, I've been gravitating to more Spring/Summer nail colours and hoping that the weather would catch-up (a girl can dream eh?).

The newest (and most expensive) colour to land in my collection is Butter London 3 Free nail Lacquer in "Knackered", I picked this up for a wedding I was attending recently and the colour has featured here on the blog before but it's a beaut. I can see myself getting a lot of wear out of it this season as it's that oil-slick effect that seems to be the in thing at the moment, but it's also quite subtle and pretty. Works well on fingers and toes and is chip-resistant to the point that it's a tiny bit difficult to remove, but in a good way.

A shade I've had for years and always go back to is MaxFactor Nailfinity in "Disco Pink", it's the only bright that I really wear these days. A very flattering bright pink shade that comes back every spring and summer for me. I wear a lot of black and navy so I love this to brighten things up a bit and again, the wear time is really good.

And then the go-to goes-with-everything shade is Topshop Nails in "Crystal Clouds". It's a pale gold that's very much a something on the nails but not so noticeable unless it's in the light, in fact I'd maybe describe it as a metallic nude on me. It's not got the lasting power of the other two so you'll have to reapply every few days but because it's so subtle it's not to noticeable when there's tiny chips in it.

My First Hair Mask

It occurred to me the other day that despite being the type of person that tries to really look after their hair, I'd never tried a hair mask. There wasn't really a reason other than "I don't really know what I'd be looking for in a hair mask". When I'm looking for a face mask, I know that I want something exfoliating, hydrating or deep cleansing, with hair masks? Who knows, but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I picked up this one from L'Oreal recently and gave it a go.

The first thing I noticed about this mask is the smell. It's a lovely minty fragrance with a hint of sweetness to it and it's lovely on your hair but not overpowering if you want to go in with a fragrance after using. With it being in a pot you have to scoop it out in the shower to apply it to the hair which can be a little bit fiddly, especially if your shower doesn't have any shelves or raised ledges in it. I found it easiest to scoop the product out, put the lidless container on the shower shelf, apply the products and then go back and put the lid on the pot. So it might be nice if they put it in a squeeze tube like Aussie does with their hair treatments/masks.

For the way the product actually performed? I'm not sure. Don't get me wrong, I do really like it, but I think it's maybe been mis-labeled/mis-marketed. The mask claims to be "Radiance Enhancing" and is supposed to make your hair look shinier, but I feel like what it really did was make my hair really soft and smooth, but didn't really do anything to it's appearance. I will continue to use the mask and report back if I see any difference in the shine but for now I will just be using it for it's moisturising/hydrating effects.

New To Me Make-Up Products

This post isn't necessarily a haul, these products are just a pick of things that I happen to have acquired over the last month through mini shoppings trips and through beauty-box subscriptions. They're the type of products that would pretty much fall through the cracks with my regular posts and so I'm going to try and do these random little group reviews every now and again so that the little bits don't get left behind.

I've been a big fan of Urban Decay Primer Potion for a long time and while I'd heard a lot about the Too Faced Shadow Insurance I hadn't found a reason to ditch my UDPP for this when it was time for a repurchase to be made. That in mind I was quite excited to receive it in a LoveMeBeauty box recently. After all the anticipation, I'm glad I'd never purchased this over my Urban Decay. While it's a nice primer and definitely does the job in keeping your eyeshadow in place all day, the formula seems to separate and become very watery if not used for a few days. Meaning if you aren't wearing powder eyeshadows everyday (which I definitely don't) this one maybe isn't for you.

Another beauty box find was the Caudalie VinoPerfect Radiance Tinted Moisturiser, BirchBox sent me a sample of this product last month and again it's one of those neither-here-nor-there products for me. It's nice and light on the skin but it's a super light coverage meaning I'd only ever really use this for a weekend face when I wasn't going to be wearing much make-up. A nice product but just not something I'd reach for all the time.

I got a miniature eye-shadow as a gift-with-purchase from No7. No7 is one of those brands that I'd seen a lot of in Boots, but nothing had every really caught my eye until a friend started mentioning some of her favourite products this weekend and No7 cropped up a couple of times. I kept that in mind on my most recent trip to Boots and picked up a couple a couple of things and this eyeshadow was in the gift bag that I'd gotten, it's one of those super wearable taupe-y shades that I get a lot of wear out of and I was excited to try it. It's not got the best lasting power and the finish is a tiny bit on the sparkly side for me but I'm continuing to experiment with different types of bases and will update you if I change my mind.

Another No7 product I picked up recently was their High Shine Lip Gloss SPF 15, I love products like this for summer. A sheer, shiny lip gloss with a hint of SPF that you can reapply at your leisure throughout the day. This one is very similar to others but has a pleasant taste and a teeny bit of wearable shimmer to it that I tend to go for more in the spring and the summer and while the bright, orange-y shade is something I'm loving at the moment, I find as it's a sheer gloss it doesn't over power a look.

And finally, I picked up Soap & Glory's Hocus Focus Instant Flaw-Softening Illuminator. It looked a lot like a possible Benefit High Beam dupe but I wasn't sure if it would end up just being the type of product I'd use mixed in with a foundation to amp up the glow a bit for the sumer time. I've only currently used it mixed into Revlon Colourstay Foundation but I really like the effect it gives, these two products work well for an oily/combination skin type as the Revlon gives the coverage and controls the oil but the Soap & Glory adds a bit of glow without taking the make-up into the greasy zone.

May Favourites

So it's that time of the month again, and I don't mean that time of the month. Monthly favourites are back for my May instalment and I actually really struggled this time around. I realised I was still loving a lot of products that I'd already featured in previous favourites posts and that the newer things I was loving are things I've picked up really recently and so don;t really think I could call them monthly favourites. But anyway, let's get cracking.

So I'll quickly skim over the repeat offenders: still massively in love with the Maxfactor Creme Blush in "Soft Pink", can honestly say that every time I've worn make-up this month, I've worn this, I just love it. Same for the NUXE Reve de Miel Lip Balm, just can't get enough of that sweet lemon-y hit of hydration before I go in with my make-up. Although I'm really in a brow-testing phase at the moment, I seem to keep coming back to the Soap & Glory Archery Brow Pencil in "Hot Chocolate" every time so that has definitely earned a second mention on here and do I even need to mention the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel..?

Okay, new stuff only from this point onwards, I promise. Let's kick of the newbies with my absolute favourite product that I've tried recently: La Roche Posay Serozinc. Seriously amazing stuff. Within a day of using it my skin was noticeably clearer and less bump-y in texture and I've seen my blemishes fade to practically none existent since I've started using it. I just can't get over how much it's affected my skin, very impressed.

Now here I might be cheating on the "new products" part as I mentioned the By Terry Ombre Blackstar in "Misty Rock" last month, but in the posts I wrote about the By Terry eyeshadow sticks I mentioned being disappointed with the shade "Brown Perfection", so I'll prepare to eat my words. When I first tried it, I was putting it all over the lid, smudging with my finger and noticing most of the colour transfer off during this "blending" process, since I've switched to blending out with a brush, or simply using it like a liquid liner for my looks and it is seriously lush when used properly. I really like the colour on my not-quite-blue-not-quite-green eye colour.

A throwback perfume I've been using a lot this month is Daisy by Marc Jacobs, a lovely light floral that I've been wearing to work in recent weeks. It's such an appropriate work scent since it's light and pretty but not too sweet or sexy. I dub this scent the blazer of the fragrance world: pretty for work but casual enough to wear out too.

And that's it for this month, sorry it was a bit of a short and sweet edition, I've just been staying faithful to products for a change this month and didn't want to bore you by harping on about the same things over and over again.

Speaking of talking about the same things over and over, have I mentioned the Oskia Renaissance... Kidding. See you on Wednesday!
